Little Brown Jug Draws Top Four PacersNineteen Owners Untroubled by Jug's One-Day Multiple-Heat Format
Owners decided their pacing stars could handle multiple heats at the Little Brown Jug, which drew all four of the season's top pacers. The purse was up from last season.
A year ago, driver John Campbell, a member of the Little Brown Jug board of directors, was asked in a public forum prior to the running of the 63rd Jug what could be done to attract the country's top pacers without fail. One inquirer had pointed out the obvious: that number one ranked and once-beaten Somebeachsomewhere had by-passed a Jug entry to participate in the more lucrative event at The Red Mile in Kentucky. Campbell's answer was succinct. "We've got to raise the purses," he said. In 2008, the Jug purse totaled $551,225. This season, it increased to $609,150. Even so, owners Jeff Snyder and Susan Grange wanted to confer closely with their trainer, Steve Elliott, before committing number one ranked pacer Well Said to this season's 64th Jug. Well Said had won the Simcoe at Mohawk less than two weeks before the September 24th Little Brown Jug, and he could face two heats, or more in one day in the Delaware County, Ohio event with only twelve days rest. Elliott had never won the Jug, but he had never had a horse who couldn't handle heats, either, he noted. So Well Said was in, along with North America's three next best pacing contenders: Vintage Master, who had won the Cane Pace, pacing's first Triple Crown event; If I Can Dream, third on male pacing's money earnings list for three-year-olds; and Mr. Wiggles, fourth on the bankroll scale.
