Snow Storm Sam Fourth in Delaware OBCSecond Division Colt Pacers Compete In Little Brown Jug UndercardLocal Ohio and area state breeders sent progeny of Nobleland Sam, Yankee Cruiser, and Towner's Big Guy to the undercard Little Brown Jug races in September.
The Little Brown Jug preliminary races on September 18 showcased Northwestern Ohio pacing star Snow Storm Sam, who took the Fulton County fairground harness racing competition by storm less than three weeks ago on Labor Day in Wauseon, Ohio. A son of Nobleland Sam and My Flirt, by Direct Scooter, young Sam is trained by the Deshler-area Sugg family and owned by stables in Deshler and North Ridgeville, Ohio. 2nd Division OBCThe three-year-old gelding went fourth in the Ohio Breeders Championship, 2nd Division, to Roxie's Big Guy, by Towner's Big Guy -- Rapid Roxie, by Look Sharp, Sugarcreek, Ohio. Valent Owner of Pennsylvania finished second, and Circleville, Ohio's Thunder Cruise, a son of Yankee Cruiser -- Thunder Sahbra, by Seahawk Hanover, went third. Valent Owner is a grandson of Nihilator, 1985 Little Brown Jug champion. He is by Towner's Big Guy and out of Key's Valentine. Others in the race included Yankee Cruiser sons Magical Cruisater, Noble Cruiser, and Sectionlinecruiser. 1st Division, Old Oaken Bucket In the day's second program, Race Seven, six colts and two geldings went to battle in the First Division for three-year-old trotters in the $75,560 (each division) Old Oaken Bucket. David Miller drove The Budster to victory in 1:56.2, beating Charlie Norris-driven Foggy Lane K and third place finisher Over Ruled, reined by John Campbell. The 2nd Division of the Old Oaken Bucket followed two races laer, with Dennis powering to victory in world record time. He trotted the mile in 1:53.3, also a track and a race record time. Miller had the seat behind Dennis. Finishing second was Spam Spade, driven by Andy Miller. Tim Tetrick brought First Pleasurelane to the wire third. Make It Happen, who raced earlier in the season in the Hambletonian, trotting's biggest single event, placed fourth. Winback Pace FinishersAged colts and geldings entered the $56,650 Winback Pace with five-year-old Pennsylvania entry Mister Big, driven by Brian Sears, coming home first in a hot 1:51 flat. Greg Grismore drove Won The West, four, to second place, and Ab's Beach Boy, a five-year-old from Indiana, captured third with Ron Pierce in the cart. With the win, Mister Big hiked his career earnings to over $3 million. Won The West, of Findlay, Ohio, is a millionaire winning son of Western Hanover. Ms. Versatility FinalIn the $117,500 Ms. Versatility Final, three older Armbro progeny compteted in a field of eight. Jody Jamieson drove Kentucky entreant Susie's Magic to the winner's circle in 1:4.2, while Godiva Hall, of Pennsylvania, with Andy Hall in the sulky, finished second, and Brian Sears-driven Falls for You, New York State, went third. Filly OBCThe filly Ohio Breeders Championship paces featured 1st Division winner Sugar Scoot Brown, Crestline, Ohio (1:55); 2nd Division victor Jane's Big Gal, Xenia, Ohio; and 3rd Division champion, Perfect M Forever (1:54.3), Xenia, a Nobleland Sam granddaughter.
