Tetrick Adds to Leading Money With KadealiaFilly Wins Breeders Crown in Biggest Upset in BC Trot HistoryApproaching $20 million in earnings, Standardbred driver Tim Tetrick scored with Kadealia in the $500,000 Breeders Crown. Kadealia was a 75-1 underdog who paid $152.00.
Just like Thoroughbreds often do, harness racing Standardbreds sometimes come out of nowhere to snatch a big payday in an unthinkable situation called an upset. An upset is usually upsetting to some folks, but how many times is it really unthinkable? As in other sporting events, on any given day a non-favorite Standardbred can carry her weight to victory on the country mile tracks. Kadealia Biggest Upset in BC TrottingThree-year-old filly trotter Kadealia came to the Standardbred season's biggest event, the Breeders Crown at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, New Jersey as a 75 to 1 shot to win. Those long odds disappeared in a mile's slow trot. Kadealia sped past Poster Pin Up in the last quarter of the Three-Year-Old Filly Trot champinship in giddy-up time, :27.3 , and squashed all thoughts of the duel that had been expected to develop between champions Lantern Kronos and Creamy Mimi. Previously this season, Creamy Mimi had narrowly defeated Lantern Kronos in the Hambletonian Oaks at the Meadowlands. Kadealia's win paid off at $152.00, the second largest Breeders Crown payout in history. In 1990, Bay's Fella shot to the Crown Open Pace title unexpectedly to fashion a $4,140.60 payoff. Tim Tetrick Leads Money List Leading drivers on the money-winning list is Tim Tetrick, who drove Kadealia to her Crown victory.
Kadealia Trainer George Teague, Jr. Changed Filly's BridleKadealia has trained better since conditioner George Teague, Jr. opted to trade in the filly's hood for an open bridle, according to driver Tetrick's statements in the December 3 issue of The Horseman and Fair World magazine (page 23, "Another Kadealia Upset" by Kathy Parker). The muscled filly was a difficult handful in the Crown elimination race, in which she placed fourth to qualify for the title run. In the final, Kadealia bolted into title contention leaving from the seven post. Tetrick eventually, however, had better position than the favorite on the lead, Creamy Mimi. Lantern Kronos, the second betting favorite, tired in the homestretch and trapped Creamy Mimi on the outside. Tetrick and Kadealia found the opening they needed at the pylons and made the most of it. Owner Elmer Fannin captured his first Breeders Crown win with his first BC starter, the upset-minded Kadealia, by Kadabra. Fannin said he "liked the looks" of Kadealia when he bought her at the Selected Yearling Sale in Lexington. In the Crown, under the winning hand of Tetrick, Kadealia looked like half a million dollars.
